Weight Loss

I am 50. I found some old journals of me and my wanting to lose just a few pounds when I was 42. Now I still want to lose a few pounds and it is 8 years later. How many "years" does it take to lose a few pounds and keep them off? So I signed up for this weight loss thing at Shape Magazine site. I shall see how it goes. It was free so it can't hurt to try it. I know my family members have struggled with their weight as well. But I will just keep at it. At least I have been trying all these years because if I wasn't trying, I certainly would have way more weight to lose. So trying counts, too. When I was around ages 22 to about 38, I didn't have a tough time at all with weight. Could eat just about anything and not gain. But the time has come for me to be on alert daily. I am a vegetarian, so that helps, but I could gain lots on that diet if I am not careful. I had to eliminate most dairy and cheeses as they can make one gain.

Anyway, I have discovered that I do know about "how" to do this weight loss thing, but it is just to stick to it and then when I lose the few pounds I want to lose, I will need to be alert to maintaining my weight loss. Well, here goes. My start date is on July 1st to try the "Shape Magazine" plan to help me lose weight. I will write back if I have some luck with it.

My Favorite Robin Photo I Took

I was just admiring the robins flying all around and took some photos of them. Didn't realize about what kinds of photos I actually got until I got home. I was happy to see this one. :-)

LA VIE EN ROSE dvd

I just saw this movie this evening. It is a heartfelt true story about Edith Piaf. It is amazing what this women goes through in her life, but still becomes a famous Paris singer with a beautiful voice. If you have a chance to see it, it is worth watching even with English subtitles that it has.

Pray For Firefighters - Poem by me

Pray For Firefighters

They are out fighting fires
That’s why they are not home
But please don’t worry
They are not alone.

There are many of them
Volunteering their time
To help save the forest
Your house or mine.

It could be your neighbor
A woman or a man
Who helps to protect us
Doing all that they can.

Let’s all help keep them safe
With prayers from our hearts
Asking for protection for them all
From each fire that starts.

Keep praying the firefighter
Comes back from each call
Unharmed and feeling proud
They protected us all.

A Fireman's Life by Daniel S. Driscoll

A fireman's life is one big surprise,
Usually he laughs, sometimes he cries.
There's always stress, toil and strife,
Hoping he's good enough to save just one life.

His wife understands, when he misses dinner,
If he runs out of church, don't think he's a sinner.
Answering a call, is tops on his list,
Regretting each one he's ever missed.

He tries and tries, but can't make us see,
The happiest men, still work for free.
Jumping from bed, fighting the cold,
Knowing what to do, without being told.

He rushes to the station, jumps on a truck.
Depending on skill, never on luck.
Putting his life on the line, for an unknown friend,
Hoping and praying, it won't be the end.
"The Bravest Men in the World", the title is fitting,
They all do their best, never come close to quitting.
Next time you see them, all their lights blinking,
Take just a minute, to think what they're thinking.

It's a hard job, so show them you care,
And help them out, with a little prayer.

Fires In Mendocino County Area

There are some fires in the Mendocino County area and our local Fort Bragg High School is set up as an evacuation center now for fire victims. I will keep all those people affected by the fires in my prayers including the firefighters which include lots of volunteer firefighters as well. They are hard working individuals who are out there trying to get these fires out. Lots of us are praying for rain, but in praying for rain we need to pray for no lightning with it as lightning is what started lots of these fires to begin with. I pray these fires will be over with soon. Here is a link to get updated information about the fires:

Today and a Friend Passing Away

Today I went for a walk. Just walked all around town. No camera today, but it was nice to just enjoy walking around my neighborhood. I walked by a friends house who passed away at the beginning of the month. It was sad to know she is no longer there. She was a photographer and we used to be close years back, but her life got busy and so did mine, so we only saw each other here and there around town. She was only 57. That isn't that old I don't think. She had cancer. It is so sad the lives cancer takes away. But I am sure my friend is happy to no longer be in pain as the last times I saw her I remember she wasn't feeling that great.

I don't drive a car, so I couldn't go to the memorial as it was way out in the redwoods somewhere. So I will just remember her in my own way and think about the times she and I got along well and did things together. We did have a falling out once, but luckily we still remained friendly when we saw each other. It is just that we weren't as close any longer after that. But we still acknowledged each other and took time to talk with one another when we ran into each other. I guess that is how it is in small towns. Even when you aren't getting along as well as you would like with someone, you still try to be friendly with each other especially since you always seem to run into one another. Well, the last time I talked to this friend was at an arts and crafts show and we had a nice conversation and I bought some of her photo magnets she made with pretty scenes on them. I have a few of them collected now on my fridge and it reminds me of her and how she did enjoy life as much as she could even with the cancer she had to live with.

I like to honor friends who passed away by just continuing to be the best me that I can be for today. I think that is a good way to honor them.

Butterflies And My Family

Do butterflies hear our cries
When we are in despair?
Sometimes when we’ve been sad
A butterflies been there.

Fluttering on a patch of sun
In the grass right in our view
You beautiful butterfly
Nothing cheers us like you do.

*Thought I would post the butterfly poem since I mentioned it in one of my comments on a previous post. Didn't have a butterfly photo though. I will work on getting one. May have to wait till next spring. We shall see.

Was That Rainbow Placed There By You? - Poem and Photo by me

Drivin’ down the road,
Feelin’ heartache and cold,
Sayin’ good-bye was so hard to do;
I looked up to the sky
And out of my eyes,
I saw a rainbow,
Was it placed there by you?

Was that rainbow placed there by you?
Did you tell the sky
That I’m feelin' blue?
Was that rainbow placed there by you?

I was almost home,
Feelin’ oh so alone,
Barely believin’ were through;
Again in the sky,
Right before my eyes,
Another rainbow
Was it placed there by you?

Was that rainbow placed there by you?
Did you tell the sky
That I’m feelin' blue?
Was that rainbow placed there by you?

A Gift A Power Brings - Poem by me

A Gift A Power Brings

I will take this life of mine
Enjoying each brand new day
I will hear the birds that sing
Smell flowers along the way.

I will live this life of mine
With music close to my heart
And when I care about you
Each days a happy new start.

I will love this life of mine
I’ve survived so many things
Each joy that I feel today
Is a gift a Power brings.

I will know this life of mine
Can be lived by only me
But with faith along my way
The more happiness there’ll be.

Walk By The Ocean Photos

Today I got a good break from home and went on a nice long walk with my son to the ocean. It was very warm today and a great day for it. I got to see a mother duck and her three babies at a pond by the ocean which was fun, too. Great to get outdoors. I realized I need to get out more for long walks as they are very refreshing and I love nature. I also got to see all kinds of dogs on the walk today. The dogs I saw were welsh corgis, a dalmation, a little poodle type of dog, ridgebacks, and yorkie terriers along with a few other mixed breeds. Since I don't have a dog now, I really enjoy seeing other peoples dogs. Glad I do have my two cats though as they are lots of fun, too.

Taking Time Off From Working On The Yard Sale

I hope to take two days off from not dealing with anymore stuff for the sale. I do have lots ready. I still have time to get more things for the sale, but I want to just do nothing toward the sale for two days so I can just relax. I wish there was a place I could put all this stuff out of my way before the sale, but I don't have a place, so I will just deal with it.

And This Is Only A Third Of Yard Sale Stuff

I am finding so much stuff around here that we no longer need. I have lots of boxes filled to the brim with things for the yard sale. I gave myself 3 weeks before this sale so I can make sure I get everything all marked up correctly. I suppose that through the years I ought to have been just donating a bag at a time to the thrift store. But I didn't. Now I have all this stuff to deal with. We could use some extra money to put toward this years heating bills that will be coming up, so I hope I do make some extra money at this years yard sale. If not, at least I will have cleared out lots of things and now we won't have as much clutter around. I don't own a car but a friend will help me with her car to donate what we don't sell to a local thrift store, so that is good.

Great Place To Sharpen Claws At

This Is How Much My Cat Likes To Be Filmed

My cat appears to be so innocent most of the time, but don't get her mad or she just might take a whack at you. :-)

Paul McCartney - Blackbird - Live

Just had this song going through my mind and it is nice to be able to find it tonight.

BrianHyland - Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

I found this video on youtube and thought it would be good to add after sharing my "Bikini In The Bag" poem earlier. :-)

The Bikini In The Bag - Poem by me

He took the sailboat out
Into the harbor.
I didn’t have a bikini
But he had one
As he handed me
The bikini in the bag.
Thank goodness it fit.
Guess those come in handy
For the many ladies
He must have had
On the boat.
And I must have made a good impression
As we sailed around the harbor
Because men were waving hello to me
As I sunbathed on the deck of the boat
In the teeny bikini.
But after awhile
I felt I was just all part of a show
Around the harbor;
Of him showing off
Another lady
Wearing the bikini
From the bag.
And that may be why
I never fell for him.

Free Cycle - Get Free Stuff or Give Away Free Stuff

Thought I would share about Free Cycle with you. Each town looks like they have one nationwide. You can share free stuff with others or look for free stuff. It is a good way to share our resources instead of just throwing stuff out that others just might need.

Couldn't Part With These For Yard Sale

All of these toys were really played with lots. I just couldn't bare to let go of any of them. So they are still here, years later. Too many good memories surround these toys.

Working On Getting Yard Sale Stuff Together

I am a night owl and have been working on getting some stuff together for a yard sale. My kids both have outgrown their childhood stuff, so we are "finally" parting with lots of it. Well, I have to admit I held back some really neat kid stuff for sentimental reasons. Maybe I will post in another photo stuff I held back.

Diana Ross - Chain Reaction

I sure wish I could have seen Diana Ross in concert. Well, at least we have the internet to look up our favorite singers now and see them. I love this song of Diana's.

Dolly Parton - Coat Of Many Colors - Live

I think Dolly Parton really is a beautiful person. This song is an example of what a lovely heart she has. I am glad she is still around and doing well. I saw her on American Idol last season and it was good to see her great spirit.

Housecleaning Day Again Plus Yard Sale Soon

Well, today I decided with the help of a friend that we will have a yard sale soon. So I decided to really start cleaning out stuff. It has been a long day with this, but I am getting things done. Still have a huge closet just stuffed to the brim with things. That will be a challenge. Well, I have a few weeks before our sale, so I will try not to overwhelm myself too much. At least I have lots of things marked already with prices on them, so that is a start. I did have fun finding some things I hadn't seen in a long while and had missed, so that was a nice reward of cleaning and sorting through things, too.

Robin Thicke - When I Get You Alone

I think this is a fun song to listen to and dance to. Actually I have had my MP3 player on and I listened to this song while riding my bike and it is a fun song to ride a bike to as well. :-)

Even If I Thought Nobody Liked Me - Poem by me

Even if I thought nobody liked me...
I’d have the sun to warm my shoulders
The birds to sing me songs
I’d have the leaves to sparkle in the breeze
And I could forgive any wrongs.

I’d have the ocean waters roaring
With the mist to fill the air
I’d see the flowers blooming
On my way to over there.

I’d have the deer in the meadow
Staring at me with wonder
I’d have the soft grass to lie upon
And feel the warmth of it under.

I’d have the smiles of the children
Or the elderly walking by
I’d have the beauty of the redwoods
Climbing high into the sky.

Even if I thought nobody liked me
I still would be okay
Because I can still feel the love
Making illogical thoughts go away.

Fun With Photos Today

I like to make photo note cards. I mostly use pretty flowers from around my town on them. Today I had fun because my photos came back in the mail from Kodak gallery which does a great job with them. I even got some 8 x 10 ones. I got some nice 8 x 10 frames at the thrift store, too. So I put up my flower photos around the house in the frames. Now it is more cheery in here with the different close ups of flowers. And I had fun making some more flower note cards today, too. I know I am not a professional photographer, but I still have a good time taking photos anyhow.

Fire Hydrant With Flowers

The way these flowers look, I don't think the dogs have discovered this fire hydrant.:-)

Book: Mere Anarchy by Woody Allen

I am half way through this book "Mere Anarchy". I am reading it in the mornings as a funny way to start my day. I really am getting a kick out of it. So many funny lines in this one. If you like Woody Allen movies, you will like this book. You can probably get a copy at your library or here:

http://www.amazon.com/Mere-Anarchy-Woody-Allen/dp/1400066417

Some Fort Bragg Trees

Today I was appreciating our trees around town, so I thought I would take some photos to share. You can tell some little one has a good time on that baby swing.

Mouse Control Committee Photo

Stumbled upon these three on a walk today. There was a fourth cat lurking about as well just to make sure the job got done right. :-)

Movie - Secondhand Lions

I just got done watching this movie. Another fine family movie. I really liked it so much. A very good story about the love between a boy and his two uncles who he is left with after his mom goes off and leaves him with them so she can go and be with loser types of men. The Uncle's tell stories of their lives to the boy. You get to hear about lots of adventures they went on. Lots of action scenes, comedy scenes and emotional scenes in this one. Worth watching.

Movie: Big Fish

My friend called me up and said that "Big Fish" was on TV, so I turned it on and started watching it. Looks like I missed a little of the beginning, but still the movie was wonderful. I would recommend it to anyone. What a beautiful story it was indeed. Carry some Kleenex for this one, too.

Today - Curtains made

I made a curtain for my son's room. I bought one at the thrift store and modified it to fit his window (It had some old time pleats at the top that I just cut off and then I sewed the top of it with a little hem to fit over the curtain rod). Hate to say it, but there was a sheet tacked up there before and my theory was "anything" I make would be better than a sheet tacked up there! At first I didn't think my son liked it, but later he said it was fine. These curtains were heavy and have a nice liner on them. They will be great in the winter and plus my son likes it dark in his room to do computer stuff and games.

I also bought another curtain rod and fixed his other curtains in his room. They actually were just kind of tacked up there, as well. I am glad it looks better in there now for him. He did a great job on cleaning his room, so I thought I would help with the curtains.

Exercise in the 50's

Today I got a DVD called "Keeping fit in your 50's". I liked it because it was a good workout for someone my age. I actually fell asleep for a little nap afterwards, so I can see it was helpful. I don't even hurt either. I was trying to do those aerobic videos for younger people, but it was just too tough to keep up with so I got discouraged. Glad I got this one from the library. Hope I can renew it a few times. Will look into seeing if I can order one of them online.

I also like to ride my stationary exercise bike and my mountain bike. I like walking lots, too. I just have keep staying motivated and just do exercise daily like I would do any other daily routine like showering. Now that the nicer weather is upon us, I hope to get out on more walks with my camera.

Another School Year Done With

I am grateful that my daughter did so well in school this year. She will be through with school by this time next year. And yes, time does fly, I now realize that!

Sarah Brightman & Gregorian-Peace moment (Live)

Wonderful when there are singers like Sarah Brightman who can sing so beautifully "live".

Today's Gratitude

My good health and the health of my family. My friends. My cats. My belief in a Power greater than me. Nature. Flowers. Photos. Nice People. The things I do have, instead of thinking what I lack.

The weather is nice and warm.

Even though I am a night owl, I don't mind it. I still get up in time to enjoy another day. Guess you don't need as much sleep when you are older anyhow. So why fight it?

Schools out for summer.

I am starting to think of some creative things to do to occupy my time. That is a good thing.

Will see some friends tomorrow so I better get some sleep, LOL.

Ways To Save Money by Me

Don't eat at restaurants. Learn how to cook the restaurant meals you like. Tons of recipes on the internet.

Ride a bike or walk. Most people jump into their cars too often.

Besides books at the library, get the movie you like on DVD from your library. You may have to wait, but it is free.

For free entertainment, look at the grand openings of stores and attend them. You usually get some free stuff there or some nice refreshments. If you live in a big town, you have more chances.

Follow the local events page in your newspaper. Often free events are held. I went to a great wild cat show put on by our local library that way. Got to see a lynx, mountain lion and other cats up close.

On clothes, go to yard sales and thrift stores. You can get good stuff there. Just keep looking.

Same with household goods - lots of bargains at yard sales and thrift stores.

If you buy brand new, at least compare prices from different stores.

To save on groceries, go early. Look for mark downs. I'm not a meat eater, but our butchers usually discount the meats in the morning and you can get some good bargains. The produce people usually do the same. Well, you know what they say about the early bird. Also, start cooking more. Make up big pots of stuff. You can then have leftovers and it is much healthier than convenience foods.

Think about less being more. You really don't need that much "stuff" around your place. Just more things to dust. (Take it from an ex pack rat - me. I still have areas to improve on this!)

Sometimes a card is just fine to give to someone especially if you are struggling financially. And if you do feel you just have to give a gift, you can still find some nice things for under $10.00. If you have lots of computer paper, you can wrap gifts in that too and just draw cute designs on the paper. Saves money on wrapping paper. And it is the thought that counts. I think people like it when you are more real and don't use your last money on a gift for them. So really now after living to age 50 I can agree a card is fine to give. If you have some flowers growing in your yard, make it a card and flowers.

Have a yard sale and there is a way to get rid of excess stuff and make some money, too. Have a friend do the sale with you and you both win.

Turn down the thermostat and put on a sweater or even a jacket in the winter. We all have to save money on our heating bills lately. In hot weather, get the morning cool air in and then shut the windows to save the cool air. Well, it never gets that hot here, so I think those of you in real hot climates have to use the air conditioner.

That is all I can think of for now. If you have any pointers, feel free to post them.

Recycle Clothes Into Pillows

I often have leftover clothes that don't even seem that hot to donate. So I use them inside pillows and sometimes outside of the pillows. You know sometimes you just may want some pillows to prop your feet up on and these kinds of pillows are great for that. They are heavy usually, but that is okay, your feet won't mind. Plus just to cheer up a spot, they come in handy. These pillows were made from two dresses I didn't wear. A purple one and a tie dyed one. Another way to save on the cost of insides of pillows is to just find some funky looking ones at the thrift shop for cheap and then just cover them. Beats the almost $10.00 price I have seen lately for inserts for pillows.

Handmade Tote From Purple Tie Dyed Jeans

The story behind this tote bag: I had a friend who gave me some tie dyed jeans she made that she no longer could fit into. So I wore them for a bit, but through the years I too could no longer fit into them. Then a tote bag contest came up at the sewing store. I thought I would make a bag for the contest out of the jeans. But then I went to the sewing store and saw all these fancy entries and knew the contest wasn't for me. I still continued on with the idea to make a bag for my creative writing folders. So I got the jeans and made them into this tote. I sewed black velvet on each side of it, too. And put some antique buttons on each side of the bag. I put an inside pocket (from the jeans) to carry a little notebook I put ideas in or little poems in. I carried that bag to many poetry readings and creative writing classes. It worked out well and it is still nice to have the memory of those purple tie dyed jeans my friend made me and the events I went to with this little tote bag. (My cats seem to love to get in photos lately, LOL)

About Blogging

Just read this article about blogging. Good info. here:

http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=the-healthy-type

I agree that I feel much better after writing either on my blog or in journals or even an email to someone. I always enjoyed writing since I was a little girl and we moved away from my Grandmother. I missed her lots, but I wrote her lots. And she loved writing me back. I am so glad that she was good about writing me back too. It kept us very close for years that way. Luckily she visited us at holidays, too. When we finally went and lived near her, I opened a kitchen cupboard and there was a little note I wrote her when I was about 8 years old taped to her kitchen cupboard. It made me feel good she kept that letter all those years. :-)

Another View Of Our Big Trees Here

Sometimes when you live somewhere for a long time you may just take the scenery for granted. I have noticed how much more I have appreciated my town by really noticing the beauty around me. I loved looking at this view the other day of the trees behind a senior living area. Nice the seniors have pretty views to look at.

Then Just Laugh - Poem by me

When you’re at the mart
Something could be funny
Like someone cutting a fart
While handing the cashier money
Then just laugh.

Stop being so serious
About all you have to do
When you are out walking
If you step in poo
Then just laugh.

If you can find things serious
You can find things funny I suppose
Like if you need a cop
And he’s busy picking his nose
Then just laugh.

And when you quit your job
After telling off your boss
And get a better job
It’s your boss’s loss
Then just laugh.

When you go to sleep at night
And awaken to your cat
Taking up almost all your pillow
And you get spat at
Then just laugh.

As we get up there in years
Laughter is what we really need
When your hair goes gray
Or when your hair recedes
Then just laugh.

Laughter Yoga Video

I think laughter is a wonderful thing. It is amazing they have laughter clubs now. Here is the website to check it out: http://www.laughteryoga.org/ Lots of good info. that is inspiring here, too. I have been riding my exercise bike to an "I Love Lucy" DVD series. It is fun to laugh while getting exercise at the same time.

Our Growing Town

Since it is almost summer, we are getting lots more traffic on the road. Here is a view of the Noyo Bridge with lots of traffic for our town. In the photo of the truck, doesn't it look like it could get hit at any moment? But nothing happened, whew! And then the other photo you can see a deer crossing sign and then an all you can eat buffet that is just opening. I am sure the deer will be happy about that.

Song Break - Signs by Five Man Electrical Band

I was in a cinematography class in the tenth grade. We teamed us as partners to make a little movie. My friend and I from the class made of a little movie to this song "Signs". It was fun making it. We just went around town and shot pictures of signs. We acted out the part where they say "Long haired freaky people need not apply" by wearing a hat and pulling out our long hair. I am not sure what else we did, but it was fun making the little film. It sure would be fun to see that film today if I could. Wonder if the teacher ever kept those old films?

Fort Bragg City Hall

Here is Fort Bragg City Hall. You can pay your water bill here and find out about other different things here. I went for a job interview here once. I was lucky to even get an interview, so they say. Instead of just getting one person interviewing me there was a panel of about 5 people. I didn't get the job. My nerves were shot just seeing 5 of them there and I am sure that is why I blew it. So anyway it is nice to know they really take it seriously about who they hire to work at City Hall.

You Like Watching Cats Eat? Shrimp Cat Video

There really is something about watching cats eat. I am not sure what it is. But if you love cats, I guess you love watching them eat, too. So here is a little few seconds video close up of my cat enjoying some leftover shrimp my son didn't want. (I used to love watching Tigers eat at Zoo's, too. I would find out what time they fed the tigers and try to be there around that time to watch them eat. Wonder if this is normal?)

Mom and Baby Whale Sculpture

This sculpture is by Town Hall in Fort Bragg. This is a nice little area to sit at, too. There are also little squares on the sidewalks with peoples names on it. You can buy a square for a certain amount of money and put a saying there or honor someone.

About Whales: We do have a whale festival in our town once a year. I have seen a whales tail and some whale spouts. Some people have been lucky to see more than that. I think the people that go out on boats get to see more whales than those of us on shore. Well, if you spent more time at the beach than some of us do, you would probably see more whales than the average person. It is just nice to know that the whales are out there.

Vegetarian Steak, Peppers, Onions over Rice - Easy

If you have some leftover rice, this is very easy. Get some frozen mixed colors green pepper strips, some Morningstar Vegetarian Steak strips and slice up a little onion. Fry all of it in a little canola oil or olive oil. Serve over warm rice with some soy sauce. I season the veggie strips with a little garlic, salt and pepper while frying, too. This meal was very fast to make since we had the leftover rice. To be healthier you could use brown rice. We just happened to use some white rice with this meal.

In Front of "Paws" Pet Store

I love the way the owners decorate their windows or outside their stores. This pet store even has water for the dogs. And of course dogs are welcome inside, too. I am sure cats are welcome too if they want.

Mowing The Lawn - Poem by me

Mowing the lawn

When I was a young girl
There were guy jobs
And gal jobs
I never mowed a lawn
Never felt that satisfaction
Of that kind of a job well done.

Now I am forty-eight
I mow my own lawn
And when I am done
I sit down and admire it
Saying to myself
“Look, you did it”
Knowing I could have done this
Years ago
When my back was stronger
Than it is today,
But I still am happy
I can take pleasure
Sipping on ice cold lemonade
Looking at how I didn’t even miss a spot
After mowing the lawn -
Even if I have to take some
Ibuprofen tonight
I still have the joy of knowing
“I” mowed the lawn
And that makes me feel good.
____________________________________

I wrote this poem a couple years back. It seems I am having an easier time doing chores now as I tend to not overdo it anymore. So no need for the Ibuprofen, yay! Well, plus it helps to have a son who helps with the yard, too. :-)

The Cat and The Lawnmower

When I go out to mow the lawn, there is this little cat that follows me everywhere. She is white with gray spots. She is very careful not to get in the way of the lawnmower. She loves to stalk me as I am doing this chore. Well, luckily I won't have to mow very much longer as it is getting brown. Most of us don't water the lawns in the summer as they get enough rain in winter to bring them back to a nice shade of green. So this little cat will have to stalk me some more in the house when I am doing my chores. :-)

Train Station and Shopping Area

This is the place you take the Skunk Train that goes to a nice forest area. There is also a nice shopping area with little shops and a deli area here.
